my next-door neighbour is taking a shower. at like 1 am. wacky.
man, the simpsons reruns are so good right now. (yes, this is the kind of stuff that occupies my day. :D) the monorail AND whacking day episodes in one day? sweeeet.
i may soon be less tv-preoccupied soon, though, cause i got a job offer today! it's retail, and i haven't confirmed that i'll take it yet, but it's good to have something on the horizon.
but in the meantime, a television meme, ganked from
mozartfan1313:
a. Post a list of 15 shows you love (current or canceled)
b. Have your friends list guess your favourite character from each show
c. When guessed bold the line and write a little bit about why you like that character
d. Post in your own livejournal.
i know i might not get a lot of answers to this, so fellow tv junkies *coughbrosialiquidizerosalunacough*, i'm counting on you! :P
1. Supernatural - Dean Winchester, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize. See, I can understand that people have other favourite characters on this show - I just can't understand WHY. Dean is a demon-hunting, leather-jacket-wearing, gun-toting, smooth-talking, prank-playing pile of AWESOME. (And at the risk of sounding biased: Yum. :D) Not that Sam isn't great, but one of my favourite things about Supernatural is that the characters act like real guys, like DUDES, on top of all the angsting and demon-killing, and Dean is nothing if not dudely. I also love the fact that despite his occasional jerkiness and ethical sluttiness, he calls reverends "Sir" and ultimately, nothing matters more to him than his family.
2. Smallville - Chloe Sullivan, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize, because this one was also just that easy. :D Chloe's probably the first character without whom, I just wouldn't watch the show anymore. She's snarky, smart, and determined, and when the writers can be bothered to keep their characterizations straight, she's one of the few people who'll give Clark a much-needed verbal slap upside the head. It all works because, now that Annette O'Toole's left, Allison Mack is hands-down the best actress on this show. Just look at the range of her expressions in this icon set - it's this that brings the character to life so memorably.
3. Rome - Titus Pullo, guessed by
mozartfan1313. Oh, Pullo. He's essentially a good-natured, British-accented id walking around in a toga. And this can lead him to do terrible things, because he's a soldier first and foremost, and will pretty much use violence to solve any problem. But he is capable of recognizing the consequences - at one point, a woman whose fiancé he killed comes to slit his throat, and his response is "Fair enough." His desire to be a better man, even if he's not capable of it, and his loyalty to Vorenus are truly touching.
4. Gilmore Girls - Lorelai Gilmore, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize, and Emily Gilmore. One of the best things about this show was its willingness to present conflicts where you could see exactly why each side thought they were right without being required to side with either. Lorelai and Emily had the most enduring issues of this type, and although I still haven't seen the series finale, the resolution of their relationship is the only reason I really want to watch it. Lorelai is definitely the lifeblood of the show, particularly since Rory got more and more annoying - she's the best kind of crazy, all pop-culture references and terrible eating habits. Emily is basically her exact opposite, and she's so invested in the blueblood socialite world that she expected for Lorelai that she can't see past it to what Lorelai actually wants. But it's also clear that when Lorelai had Rory and left home, it broke Emily's heart right in half, and she's never completely gotten over it. Their relationship is so twisted and full of emotional pitfalls, but both characters are so well-acted that you're drawn right in.
5. Grey's Anatomy (before it started sucking and i stopped watching) - George O'Malley, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize, and Miranda Bailey. George is just so completely awkward and bumbling and funny and adorable that I actually don't know how anyone could not love him. (cough
brosiacough.) And Bailey will KICK YOUR ASS. I miss the days when she would smack all the other characters back into line when they were getting too ridiculous.
6. Undergrads - Jessie, guessed by
liquidize and
brosia. (Well, not technically, but he got her name confused with the other punky sarcastic cartoon purple-haired Asian chick. Seriously.) I watched this show a lot in first year, when I too had purple hair and a crush on my good geeky friend who was busy obsessing over another girl, so I feel a certain kinship with Jessie. That, and her fake ID reads Sylvia Rabinowitz, or as she puts it, "the Kung Fu Jew". :D
7. Clone High - Cinnamon J. Scudworth, guessed by
kingofthule. In a show that is made fantastic by all of its absurd and ridiculous characters, he's the most absurd and ridiculous of them all. Whether he's trying to hide his evil yet incompetent plans from the Board of Shadowy Figures or rolling on the floor, incoherent with grief over being beaten out for prom king by John Stamos ("STAMOS!!!"), I love him so very much.
8. The Powerpuff Girls - Buttercup, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize.
Adam: I don't know the Powerpuff Girls well enough to know your favourite character.
Me: You'd only really have to see one episode to know.
Adam: ...Which one's the angry one again?
Me: ...Buttercup.
Adam: That's your favourite then?
Me: .....MAYBE.
She's surly, ass-kicking, and her dress is my favourite colour. What more do you need?
9. Firefly - Captain Malcolm Reynolds, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize. I clearly have a thing for characters who are capable of being both dangerous and ass-kicking and completely goofy. Mal is so damaged by the war and so reluctant to care about people any more than he has to, but there's an unmistakable warmth and humour to him as well. (This is probably because Nathan Fillion is possibly the world's funniest human being.) Mal is a man who doesn't want to admit just how honourable and loyal he's still capable of being, but he'll also stand naked in a desert and call it a good day. (And again I say to you: Yum.)
10. Friends - Chandler Bing, guessed by everyone. Of course it's Chandler. Come on. :D He's got most of the best lines from this show, and I am nothing if not a sucker for a good quote. Matthew Perry just has amazing comic timing, and they also made sure he was more than just comic relief. The storyline where he falls in love with Joey's girlfriend is one of my all-time favourites. Chandler's also just, frankly, such a dork and so often a loser or engaging in awkward social flailing, and I can definitely relate.
11. Buffy - Oz, guessed by
brosia, and Spike. Speaking of identifying with flaily dorks. :D Willow was so underappreciated by Xander in the early seasons, and then Oz came along. And not only did he like Willow, but he REALLY liked her. Smitten the very first time he saw her in her very-authentic-but-not-at-all-sexy Inuit costume, before he'd even talked to her. He was just so great and cool (and you rarely see an indie rock guy dating a nerdy girl on TV) and they were so great together. They also used him really well, mixing a laconic, deadpan tone in with their existing wackier characters.
As for Spike - just loved him. Loved the coat, loved the accent, loved the bleached hair and the chipped nail polish, love love LOVED his relationship with Drusilla. They were the first vamps on the show that really showed you that, as monstrous as they were, these beings used to be human, and some of them hadn't gotten as far away from it as they might have liked. I didn't like everything they did with his character in later years, but James Marsters always had the chops to pull it off. Plus, see above re: keeping things interesting - Spike was one of the many voices written into the show that kept things from getting too melodramatic and self-centred. Pretty much everything he does in 'Lover's Walk' is fantastic, but my favourite is that moment when Buffy and Angel keep going on about how they're totally just friends now, honest, and Spike finally just says, in essence, "You know what? That's BULLSHIT." Man, I've got to rewatch my Buffy DVDs!
12. Angel - Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, guessed by
brosia and
liquidize. Wesley definitely had his moments on 'Buffy' (cf. 'Doppelgangland'), but I didn't really love him until he was on 'Angel', for the following reasons: 1) he mussed up his hair and grew stubble and got much cuter (because yes, I am that shallow), but more importantly, 2) he just got kicked in the teeth over and over again. Seriously. The number of horrible things that happened to him in just five seasons boggle the mind, and they just seemed to keep coming one after the other. This one's all about the woobie factor.
13. Sex and the City - Miranda Hobbs, guessed by everyone. For better or for worse, Miranda is basically my idol. (Minus the part about being a lawyer. ::shudder:: Law school.) It all started with me being fifteen and wanting to get a really short haircut, and looking at Miranda and saying to myself "See? It can still be versatile! I'm GOING for it!" (The dyeing it blue part I came up with on my own. :D) But I have always loved her cynicism, her pragmaticism, her loyalty and stubbornness (which have even gotten both of us into some of the same problems). Of all the characters in all the shows I've watched, and there have been a LOT, she's the one I've identified with the most and seen the most of myself in. So in conclusion, I like her because I'm self-centred. :D
14. That 70s Show - Kitty Forman, guessed by
kingofthule, Eric Forman, guessed by
brosia, and Donna Pinciotti. Kitty is a pitch-perfect depiction of a sweet woman with a little bit of an edge who just wants things to go smoothly. She's hilariously earnest and eager to help people out, and the scene where she imitates her OWN trademark laugh perfectly, while STILL making it obvious that it's one step removed from its usual sound, is genius. As for Eric, I'm sure it's become clear that I love me a smartass, and that's definitely what he is. He's also so very in love with Donna, and that keeps him (and their relationship) from getting obnoxious. The way he never just kisses her in passing, but is so sweetly into her that he can't help but step in with his whole body every time, makes me melt. Donna's the other half of my favourite couple, but they also made her a lot more. She's a smart, independent, cool, and openly feminist sitcom character, which is so rare and completely awesome.
15. Family Guy - Stewie Griffin, guessed by
kingofthule and
liquidize. As thuley put it - I mean really, who else? I love that Stewie is by turns an evil genius, a complete nerd ("I was making my own radio shows for fun. Everybody does it! Well, everybody I know, anyway."), and an actual baby. The scene where Peter is playing peekaboo with him, and Stewie is going, "My goodness, where did you go? He left right in the middle of a conversation, that's rather ru- oh, there you are!" is priceless. Not to mention,
vitruvianman does a FANTASTIC impression of him, so I've gotten attached because it's like having a portable talking Stewie doll! (And is much more versatile than that ACTUAL portable talking Stewie doll my mother bought us for the car. :D)
it's pretty heavy on comedies and cartoons, but it was actually surprisingly hard to think of shows that i loved AND had a favourite character from - there were a lot of dramas (heroes, the west wing, veronica mars) from which i just couldn't pick. even so, i have multiple favourites from some of these shows, so i'll post if anyone gets any of them.
